There are four ways up to the resorts from Geneva, and none of them is right for everyone. This guide gives the real journey times, the real prices, and the cases where each option is the least bad one — including when that option isn’t ours.

1 · The four ways up

The train

There is no direct train between Geneva Airport and any resort. The real journey is Geneva-Cornavin, then a TGV or regional train to Bourg-Saint-Maurice or Moûtiers, then a last leg by bus or taxi. Allow five to seven hours door to door, two or three changes with your skis, and one missed connection that leaves you on a platform. It is the cheapest option and the most tiring.

The shared shuttle

A minibus that waits until it is full, then serves several resorts and several addresses. Advertised at around £35 to £45 per person, it becomes expensive for four and more so for six. Above all it costs time: one to three hours waiting in arrivals depending on other passengers’ flights, then the detours. It genuinely suits one or two people who are not in a hurry.

The hire car

One detail the comparison sites don’t show: most Geneva rental desks charge snow chains or winter tyres as an extra, and the Swiss motorway vignette is compulsory if you drive back through Switzerland. Add resort parking, usually paid and usually a walk from the chalet. Hiring makes sense if you plan to move every day; for one return trip it rarely comes out cheaper than a private transfer for four.

The private transfer

A vehicle for you alone, a driver who tracks your flight, and departure as soon as your bags are off the belt. That is our job. The price is fixed, given before departure, and it covers the whole vehicle — not each seat.

2 · What each one really costs

The example below is Geneva → Courchevel for a family of four on a February Saturday. The first three figures are market orders of magnitude; the last is our own firm fare.

3 · Time and price to each resort

Distances measured on the real road route, not as the crow flies. Times assume a clear road; in heavy snowfall allow twenty to forty minutes more.

4 · Which side of Geneva Airport

Geneva Airport has two exits: a Swiss sector and a French sector. They do not lead to the same place and they are not equivalent depending on how you leave. 5 · What winter changes on the road

Three things no comparison site will tell you.

Passes close. The Petit-Saint-Bernard, between the Tarentaise and the Aosta Valley, is shut from November to May. So is the Iseran, between the Maurienne and Val d’Isère. A route calculated in July has nothing to do with the same route in January — which is why our times are winter times.

Saturday is not an ordinary day. It is changeover day for rentals across the Alps. Between 10 am and 4 pm the last few kilometres before a major resort can take twice as long. A flight landing at 1 pm on a February Saturday reaches the resort later than a 3 pm flight on a Tuesday.

Equipment is compulsory, not advisable. Under French mountain law, winter tyres or chains are required from 1 November to 31 March in the listed communes. Our vehicles run winter tyres all season with chains on board.

6 · Skis, luggage and children

The question every group asks: seven people, but seven pairs of skis? Yes. We state one pair per seat — eight pairs in an eight-seat van — and the equipment travels with you, never in a separate trailer. Snowboards and boot bags included.

Approved baby seats, child seats and boosters are fitted before you arrive and included in the price. French law requires a suitable restraint up to ten years old or 135 cm. Give each child’s age and weight when booking, that is all.

7 · When to book

For a Saturday in the school holidays — February above all — book three to four weeks ahead. That is not a sales tactic: on those days every driver in the valley is out, and a call the evening before for eight people often finds nothing. Midweek and outside the holidays a few days is enough, and we regularly take same-day jobs.
